Three Baptisms, One Baptism: Water, Fire, and Holy Spirit in the Books of Jeu and the Transformation of Christian Initiation

This article examines the contrasting styles and theological meanings of baptism in the Books of Jeu and in contemporary Christian practice. Preserved in the Coptic Bruce Codex, the Books of Jeu present a distinctive late ancient Christian ritual system in which Jesus directs three separate baptisms: the baptism of water, the baptism of fire, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. These rites involve incense, vine branches, bread, wine, aromatic substances, sacred names, seals on the forehead, bodily movements, and prayers for heavenly assistance.

The study argues that these baptisms function as stages of purification, authorisation, and preparation for the soul’s passage through a guarded celestial order. Water cleanses and enrols the initiate, fire refines and protects, and the Holy Spirit completes the process of transformation. Baptism therefore becomes more than public confession or entry into an earthly community. It becomes a ritual means of making the initiate recognisable within the Kingdom of Light.

The article then compares this threefold initiatory system with the dominant Christian understanding of one baptism performed with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Although modern Christian traditions vary in their use of immersion, pouring, sprinkling, anointing, laying on of hands, chrismation, candles, white garments, and profession of faith, they generally gather these meanings around one baptismal act.

The article concludes that the principal difference is not between ritual complexity and simplicity, but between two different theological structures. The Books of Jeu distribute initiation across three successive mysteries designed for celestial ascent, while mainstream Christianity concentrates cleansing, new birth, incorporation into Christ, reception of the Spirit, and ecclesial belonging within one Trinitarian baptism.
