The Technocene Covenant: Cyber Ecology, Rewilding, and Eschatological Participation in the Renewal of Creation

The ecological crisis is unfolding within a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, autonomous machines, digital monitoring, and planetary technological systems. Christian environmental thought has often responded through the language of stewardship. Although stewardship has encouraged responsibility toward the natural world, it can still place humanity at the centre as the permanent manager of creation.

This article introduces the Technocene covenant as a theological framework for understanding carefully limited technology as a means of ecological repair, restraint, and participation in the renewal of creation. It focuses on automated rewilding, including artificial intelligence, environmental sensors, autonomous seed dispersal, robotic restoration, satellite observation, and wildlife monitoring.

Technology is not treated as inherently opposed to nature. Its moral value depends on whether it extends human domination or creates conditions in which ecological systems can recover their own relationships and independence. Creation theology provides the basis for understanding human creativity as part of material existence, while eschatology gives ecological restoration its future direction. Such restoration cannot produce the final renewal promised by Christian faith, but it may offer a proleptic sign of that future.
