Theosophy and the Modern Search for Hidden Wisdom: History, Doctrine, Global Exchange, Controversy, and Christian Critique

Grace, Daniel J. ORCID ↗

Abstract

Modern Theosophy emerged in the late nineteenth century at the intersection of Spiritualism, comparative religion, evolutionary speculation, colonial knowledge, and dissatisfaction with both dogmatic Christianity and reductive materialism. This article offers a historically grounded and critically balanced account of the movement founded in New York in 1875. It examines Theosophy’s principal doctrines, its engagement with Hindu and Buddhist traditions, the Mahatma controversy, root-race theory, Annie Besant, Charles W. Leadbeater, Jiddu Krishnamurti, its influence on modern esotericism, and its relationship to historic Christianity. Written for scholarly and general readers, it distinguishes documented history from claims dependent upon occult authority or unverifiable tradition.
